Career Training
UC San Diego Extension will dole out a total of $100,000 in grants to help San Diego residents who are unemployed participate in career seminars, it was announced Wednesday.
The first 500 San Diego residents who are on unemployment and apply online may enroll at no charge for up to three career seminars offered by UCSD Extension, according to the university.
The seminars -- which cover topics such as career changing, networking, resumes, corporate politics, salary negotiation and interviews -- normally cost between $45 and $75, according to UCSD.
Those interested in applying for the seminar grants can do so at

Faith & Politics
The fight to ban gay marriage with Prop 8 is heating up and several local churches are heavily involved. That has some critics asking if religious groups have gone too far.
The Rock Church sponsored a Yes on Prop 8 rally, hosted by Pastor Miles McPherson. Their website directs people to videos in support of the proposition.
The IRS rules regarding churches and tax exempt status don't allow advocating for a particular candidate but many ministers believe it does not bar speaking out on moral or spiritual issues relating to a specific referendum.

Girl Power
Self-esteem and body image for teenage girls was the center of discussion at a fundraiser in Encinitas.
Girls Incorporated held their annual luncheon Wednesday to help raise money for a variety of programs that help young girls empower themselves by building a positive self-image.
Heather Myers emceed the event. The founder of Girls Inc. spoke about the challenges teenage girls face in today's diverse society. Things like bulimia, anorexia, suicide and teen pregnancy.
Members participate, on average, in 30 hours a week of afterschool, weekend and summer activities.
