Since the current was strongest in the head of the submarine canyon, it seems possible it was related to processes within the canyon. Perhaps a large slug of sediment flowed down the canyon bottom further down slope, which is a common occurence. If it headed close to the shoreline, it could generate a down-canyon current that reached all the way from the top of the canyon to the bottom.
