1618, English adventurer, writer and courtier Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded for allegedly conspiring against James I of England.

1863, Sixteen countries meeting in Geneva agreed to form the International Red Cross.

1901, Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of President William McKinley, was executed by electrocution.

1923, Turkey became a republic following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.

1929, The New York Stock Exchange crashed in what would eventually be called the Crash of '29 or Black Tuesday. 

1941, More than 10,000 Jews were shot by German occupiers in Lithuania.

1956, Israeli forces invaded the Sinai Peninsula and pushed Egyptian forces back toward the Suez Canal.

1960, Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) won his first professional fight.

1966, The National Organization for Women (NOW) was formed.

1991, The Galileo spacecraft made its closes approach to 951 Gaspra, to become the first probe to visit an asteroid.

2002, A fire destroyed a luxurious department store in Ho Chi Minh City, killing more than 60 people.  It's the deadliest peacetime disaster in Vietnam's history.

2004, Arabic news network Al Jazeera broadcast an excerpt from a video of Osama bin Laden in which the terrorist leader first admits direct responsibility for the September 11, 2001 attacks.
