Authorities Say Racing Caused Serious-Injury Crash in Valley Center

Tools

VALLEY CENTER - A 51-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday when he crashed his sports car off a rural North County road, apparently while racing another motorist.

The driver of the silver 2008 Chevrolet Corvette lost control while speeding to the south alongside a tan or dark-colored compact pickup truck on Valley Center Road, north of Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The car veered off the west side of the roadway, smashed through two fences lining a footpath, spun out and crashed into a tree, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The driver of the truck pulled over and got out along with a male passenger, Bettencourt said. They checked on the occupant of the mangled Corvette, then got back into the pickup as emergency crews were pulling up and drove away to the south.

Medics took the injured man, a Valley Center resident whose name was not released, to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The two drivers appeared to have been involved in a speed contest when the crash occurred, according to witnesses, who were unable to provide detailed descriptions of the pickup truck or its two occupants.

Authorities asked anyone with information on the crash to call the CHP's Oceanside station at (760) 757-0824.
