Cash Mob Gives Independent Business a Boost
SAN DIEGO – A South Park business was bombarded Tuesday night by a cash mob, and that's a good thing. The first ever cash mob in San Diego stormed "Make Good" an independently owned art shop, with the goal of giving a local business a boost.
"It's an influx of cash into the local economy," said San Diego Cash Mob Organizer, Lauren Way.
About two dozen "cash mobbers" met in South Park Tuesday evening, agreeing to spend $20 in a local business. The exact business wasn't announced until moments before the cash mob entered the store and started buying jewelry, clothing and other decorative items. Make Good sells handmade and recycled creations by local artists.
"It means a lot," said Make Good owner, Sophia Hall. "A lot of our artists, especially right now, are unemployed or on disability and this is extra income for them so it's a huge impact."
The cash mob chooses stores that give back to the local community, are independently owned and operated, and nearby a good bar for a post-shopping spree spirit. The first cash mob in the country took place in Ohio last month.
