Coronado Condo Catches Fire Leaving a Man Homeless

By Lindsay Hood

A Coronado man got quite the surprise Wednesday morning when he woke up to heavy smoke inside his condo.

The fire started around 3 a.m. inside Mike McAree's condo inside the Coronado Bay Club on First Street.

"It was becoming clearer and clearer that there was a fire in the building," McAree said. "I didn't see any flames from my balcony or down the hall, but at that point, I pulled the local alarm and called 911."

Dozens of residents had to evacuate the building while fire crews made sure they got the fire under control.

It took fire fighters about 25 minutes to knock down the flames. Most of the smoke damage was confined to the third floor unit where the fire started.

No word yet on what caused the fire, but it is believed to have started in the wall of the unit.

No injuries were reported.
