Counting San Diego's Homeless

Tools

By Lindsay Hood

SAN DIEGO - Volunteers spread out across the county Friday to count the number of homeless people living in San Diego.

The annual count, organized by the San Diego County Regional Taskforce on the Homeless, began at 5 a.m. Volunteers spent about 3 to 4 hours in various communities counting homeless people living in shelters or on the street, organizers said.

The count helps the county qualify for federal funding to help combat homelessness, enabling the region to implement services and find solutions that help the homeless and their families find housing again.

Last year, more than 9,000 people in San Diego were homeless, an increase of 6 percent.
