Homicide Detectives Investigate Suspicious Death Near Escondido

SAN MARCOS -- Sheriff's homicide investigators spent hours combing through rugged terrain high above the 15 freeway Wednesday looking for clues after a mountain biker found a woman's body.

The discovery in the 28000 block of Lawrence Welk Court in unincorporated San Marcos near Escondido was reported shortly before 2 p.m., Lt. Larry Nesbit said.

Because of "suspicious circumstances," homicide investigators were called to the scene, he said.

Nesbit would not elaborate on those circumstances, but the man who found the body told San Diego 6 there was disturbed earth near the woman, like there had been a struggle.

The 54-year-old North County man asked not to be identified. He said he was mountain biking in the area when he made the discovery.

Investigators would not reveal any details about the woman, but the biker told San Diego 6 the woman was younger, with reddish-brown hair, and wearing baggy clothes. He said she was face down, about 5 feet from the road.

The area where the woman was found is remote and not used frequently, said Nesbit. The road dead ends in two directions.

"It's sad, you know? Somebody's daughter," said the North County man.

The woman's identity, age, and cause of death will be released by the medical examiner, Nesbit said.
