Increased Bike Thefts in San Diego"A gentleman took a bike for a test drive and never came back with it....it was valued about 800 dollars, 900 dollars," says Mohammad Karimi, owner of San Diego Bike Shop. He says, "It's a daily occurrence that people fall victim to it. It's a major problem." San Diego Police say there were 1,024 bike thefts in San Diego last year from January through October. Although reports declined Downtown 3%, citywide they rose 23%. Bryan Hancy says he's had countless bikes stolen from him. He created www.stolenbicycleregistry.com where you can post information about your stolen bike in hopes of maybe getting it back. Although, he says, the chances are slim. He says, "Sites like Craigslist and eBay where it's incredibly easy to show up with little to no traceability...by the time they get a hold of you and you file a report and the police contact Craigslist. The guy's long gone." Karimi says thieves use simple tools to cut through locks. Eventhough cable locks are lightweight and flexible, he says, if you live in a high crime area you may want to invest in U-locks, but you have to remember to lock both your frame and your tire. He says, you may also want to ask your employer to let you to keep your bike in the building. |
