SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego announced Wednesday that it ranks eighth among state colleges in the United States with the highest wage potential for graduates, according to a report by PayScale, a firm that compiles compensation information.

The starting median annual salary for a UCSD graduate is $48,200, according to the report. The mid-career median yearly wage was $96,700.

"One of the greatest measures of a university is the quality of its graduates," said Armin Afsahi, executive director of UC San Diego Alumni Affairs. "Our alumni are not only going on to achieve great success, they are also advancing their communities, creating jobs and building our economy."

UCSD has about 141,000 alumni, of whom about 56,000 still live in San Diego County.

San Diego State University ranked 54th with a median starting salary of $43,500 and mid-career pay of $82,800. SDSU has more than 200,000 alumni, many still living in the area.

The list ranked several hundred schools. Only the salaries of graduates with bachelor's degrees were included.
