VISTA - A miscommunication between a North County couple on who was watching their toddler son Thursday led the father to report the tyke missing and prompted authorities to search for him until he returned home unharmed under his mother's care several hours later.

The man made an emergency call about 1:50 p.m. to report that he couldn't find 3-year-old Frank Rodriguez at the family's Vista home, sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said.

A volunteer search-and-rescue team fanned out through areas around the Arcadia Avenue residence, aided by a sheriff's helicopter crew making passes overhead.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the mother returned home with the boy, Aquino said. The woman told authorities she had simply taken the child shopping and had forgotten her cell phone.

"The sheriff's department takes (every) missing-person report very seriously, especially if it involves a child," the spokeswoman said. "Each case is judged on the information we have at the time of the report. At the time of (this) report, there was a possibility that the toddler may have walked away (from home)."
