SAN DIEGO - San Diego scored in the top 10 of "Coolest Cities" in America in a survey released Wednesday by Forbes magazine, ranking just behind San Francisco.

The publication's "America's Coolest Cities 2014" compilation also included Riverside in the elite 10 category.

According to Forbes, researchers considered a variety of factors in determining a city's rank, including the size of a municipality's young adult population (20-34 years old), ethnic and cultural diversity, number of recreational opportunities and restaurants, as well as "net migration," gauging a city's attractiveness by the number of people settling there.

Washington, D.C. was ranked No. 1, followed by Seattle, Austin, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Riverside, Boston and Dallas.

According to the survey, San Diego's highest marks were in recreational opportunities, where it scored a 96, and arts and culture, where it earned a 92.
