Two Reactors Now Shut Down at Nuclear Power Plant

Tools

SAN ONOFRE - "It's another wake up call," said Ace Hoffman, who lives in Carlsbad, not far from San Onofre.

Two nuclear reactors at San Onofre remain off-line following a series of events that began earlier this week.

In the latest development-- federal regulators say unusual wear has been found on dozens of new tubes that carry radioactive water at the nuclear plant.

This comes two days after a small leak was discovered in a tube, in a steam generator under the Southern dome known as unit 3.  Southern California Edison says both incidents are minor and are not even classified as what they call the "least severe emergency" -- meaning there is no radiological danger.

This plant provides energy to 1.4 million homes.

Both reactors will be shut down for several days while further tests are done.
The last time both reactors were down was last September.

Southern California Edison says it doesn't expect blackouts or other disruptions because they have plenty of reserve power to meet customers’ needs.

Hoffman, and the group he is with, Residents Organized for a Safe Environment, want cities near the nuclear plant to provide radiation monitoring systems that would be available to the public.
"When there's a release like there was in this case, we want to know what was released, where were the winds going," said Hoffman.  "We want to be informed right away."
