SAN DIEGO - Two men suspected of robbing a Rancho Bernardo bank Thursday led police on a lengthy road chase before jumping out of their getaway car and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.
One of the men handed a demand note to a teller at a U.S. Bank branch office on Bernardo Center Drive shortly before 4 p.m., according to San Diego police.
He then fled with an undisclosed amount of money and got into the passenger side of a Jeep Cherokee parked nearby, SDPD Officer Brad Ruff said.
A short time later, officers spotted the SUV on southbound State Route 163 and gave chase. The pursuit exited the freeway and wound over numerous city streets before eventually entering Lemon Grove, where the Jeep ran over a tire- flattening spike strip that police had laid in their path on Broadway at Buena Vista Avenue.
The suspects then got out of the vehicle and ran, but were unable to elude officers, Ruff said.
The alleged robbers' names were not immediately available.
