SAN DIEGO - A voter initiative that would make it illegal to get divorced in California is one step closer to making it on the 2010 ballot.

Supporters of the initiative must collect nearly 700,000 signatures in order to qualify it for a vote.

The proposed amendment would change California's constitution, to eliminate the ability of married couples to get divorced. They could, however, still seek an annulment.

The measure is being pushed by those who support gay marriage to make a point to those who argued for Proposition 8 last year, saying that gay marriage should be banned because it ruins the sanctity of marriage and the family unit.

most people I know that voted for Prop 8 have no problem with gays and lesbians having some type of union with the same rights as a hetero married couple. The only thing they objected to was changing the definition of marriage to include unions of people of the same sex, which is what Prop 8 was about - not hating gays and lesbians, or thinking there's something wrong with them, or that they are second-class citizens. I'm sure there is a small percentage of people that feel negatively about gays and lesbians, but I don't know anyone who professes those opinions, so I can't speak for them. The leap that some people make to demonize others that don't agree with them, on either side of any arguement, doesn't result in anything productive. If anything, it alienates those in the middle and makes a solution to the issues more difficult than before...

I think its great. What is a joke is the fact that the people who were against gay marriage based their argument on the fact that marriage is sacred, but yet most of them have divorced. So how is marriage sacred then when divorce rates are so High? The truth is gay people are everywhere and are second class citizens, they make the TV and movies you love to take your family to go see, they are the Dr that saves your families lives when you go to the hospital. they are even in the military that protect your freedom and our teaching your kids in school, the thing is people do not who is gay and who is not and everyone should be entitle to marry the person they love and it will not effect anybody because they are already together and living in your neighborhood anyways. I think those who oppose gay marriage should be not be allowed to divorce because is goes against everything they said last year.and I doubt ROBATTHERANCH that they blew it big time. I think this might open up eyes at how stupid people are who are against gay marriage. If not it will show them how two faced they are.I don't think anything is a waste of taxpayers' money if it means in the long run that equality we be for EVERYONE.Prop 8 was a waste of time and money because eventually everyone will have the right to marry the ones they love. Life is so short and more people should be concerned about themselves instead of other people.Gay marriage is not going to effect straight marriage. people are afraid of things that they shouldn't be. I doubt this will pass but I hope it opens peoples eyes and change their mind on how they view marriage.

Whomever thought up this-here "Amendment" to the California State Constitution obviously did not think it through before submitting the paperwork. There seems to be no provision for those in situations where "staying together" would put one spouse in mortal danger...or any other reason, for that matter. Sorry to say, but the folks supporting Gay Marraige blew it big time. "Marraige Protection"-type initiatives (especially ones like this) are yet another reason why the whole initiative process needs major overhaul. Instead of such schweinfressen that wastes the voters' time and the taxpayers' money, both sides need to start working for real change. Otherwise, both sides will continue to look like buffoons in a time where serious solutions are needed to end this successfully!

Since both "sides" are now apparently in agreement of the goal of protecting marriage and family, we need an initiative that would make it illegal for non-married people to adopt or be guardians of children.
