EAST COUNTY - Some East County residents got an early wake-up call by law enforcement officers. It was part of a massive warrant sweep primarily looking for people who were charged with DUI but didn't appear in court or who haven't followed the court's orders.
"We're helping along the system by making them accountable," says CHP spokesperson Brian Pennings.
At last count more than 65 people had been arrested. The sweep is possible because of a grant targeting drunk drivers along what is considered one of the most dangerous roadways in California; State Route 67.
"State Route 67 was chosen because of the number -- the high number -- of incidences of DUI related injury and fatal collisions that we've had on that corridor," says CHP Captain Teresa Sumprer.
The grant funds 1400 hours of additional enforcement along State Route 67, so you'll see more officers in that area through March of next year.
"We're here because it's about saving lives. Bottom line, we need them off the road."
