DESCANSO - Five people were displaced Wednesday when fire ripped through their single-story house in Descanso, authorities said.
The non-injury fire in the 9800 block of Descanso Trail was reported at 5:18 a.m., according to a Cal Fire dispatcher. Firefighters gained control about an hour later, she said.
The blaze was caused by sparks from a fireplace that ignited some carpet, according to Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler, who said the home did not have a working smoke alarm.
Damage was estimated at $120,000.
The Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents, including four minors, according to Mohler.
