SAN DIEGO - A magnitude 5.0 earthquake centered in Baja California was felt in areas of San Diego County Thursday morning.
The temblor struck in an area about 23 miles south-southeast of Calexico and 98 miles east of Tijuana at 11:23 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The U.S.G.S. reports the quake was felt by people as far away as downtown San Diego, La Jolla and Miramar.
A 5.0 magnitude earthquake is classified as a "moderate" earthquake by the U.S.G.S. and would not normally be expected to cause injury or damage. But officials in Mexico say some schools and public buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
A cluster of more than 20 earthquakes has shaken the same area since late Wednesday afternoon with the 5.0 magnitude quake the strongest.
