EL CAJON- A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured and his grandfather less severely hurt Wednesday when a car hit them in an East County intersection.

The man was walking the child to school when a Dodge Dart struck them as the 84-year-old woman behind the wheel was making a left turn at South Third Street and Lexington Avenue in El Cajon about 8 a.m., Sgt. Fenton Sue said.

The grandfather rolled on top of the hood of the 1960s-era sedan, and the boy went underneath it and was dragged along the pavement for about 30 feet before the vehicle came to a stop, according to Sue.

Medics took the youngster to Children's Hospital and transported the man to Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. Details on their injuries were not released.

The motorist told police the sun was in her eyes at the time of the accident, preventing her from seeing the pedestrians, the sergeant said. She was not immediately cited, though the accident remained under investigation.
