ENCINITAS - A would-be robber came away empty-handed when his intended victim gave him the slip instead of cash in a North County apartment on Friday, a San Diego County sheriff's sergeant said.

A man in his 20s entered the apartment at 141 Grandview St. in Encinitas around 10 a.m., raised his shirt to display the wooden grip of a handgun and told the resident he could "do it the easy way or the hard way," Sgt. Thomas Yancey said.

The resident, who'd been watching television in his living room, told the suspect his money was in the kitchen and went that direction. But instead of returning, he escaped out the back door, Yancey said.

The sergeant said deputies searched the area without success for the gunman, who was described as black, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, a buzz/step haircut and two diamond studs in each ear.
