SAN DIEGO - Five students at a Chula Vista elementary school have been diagnosed with chicken pox, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency reported Monday.
Staff and parents of students at Casillas Elementary School have been notified about the outbreak.
It is the 10th chicken pox outbreak at area schools this year, according to the HHSA.
All five of the infected students had received one dose of the chicken pox vaccine, according to the HHSA. Two doses of the vaccine are recommended.
"Ninety-nine percent of people develop immunity after two doses," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.
Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella virus. The disease is easily spread by coughing, sneezing or contact with chicken pox blisters.
