A police chase that resulted in a crash and serious injury closed a ramp from Interstate 15 for several hours Saturday in Mira Mesa.
It began when San Diego Police responded to a domestic violence call in Torrey Highlands shortly after 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
A woman said her boyfriend illegally took her car after an argument in the 7700 block of Via Toscana, according to San Diego Police Sgt. Art Campa.
Police spotted the car eastbound on the Ted Williams Highway 56 as it approached I-15. A pursuit began south on the 15, but the suspect evaded police, getting lost in traffic at speeds exceeding 110 mph, according to San Diego Police.
"The suspect exited the freeway on Carroll Canyon Road at a high rate of speed and collided with a Budget rental van in the intersection," according to Campa.
The suspect was trapped in the wreckage, but officers were able to pull him out as the wreckage caught fire, according to Sgt. Campa.
The suspect was seriously injured with several broken bones and was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. The van driver has minor injuries.
The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert and closed the Carroll Canyon off-ramp from southbound I-15 after a crash shortly after 3:30 p.m.
The northbound ramp from I-15 to Carroll Canyon remained open, but traffic was not being allowed to turn west from the ramp.
The ramp and intersection reopened several hours later after police had concluded their investigation.
