What are you missing that's making you get old too soon? That's a question a local doctor is asking his patients -- and even himself. He's an expert on the subject of aging and he says getting yourself in balance can add years to your life.
"Baby Boomers don't want to get old - they want to continue to bike ride and ski. They want to be healthy," says Dr. Larry Emdur Of Alvarado Hospital. He's a 61-year-old boomer himself, who likes hitting the slopes with his son and staying active. But he says in his fifties he began feeling the years. "It was kind of like I lost my mojo, you know?"
Dr. Emdur says he got his mojo back by going back to school and becoming a board certified, anti-aging specialist. What he learned is that most people, past the age of 40 are simply out of balance as their bodies fail to produce the hormones and chemicals they used to.
"On every patient we find that they're missing a specific vitamin or amino acid. I can actually write a prescription for them -- it's usually only 3 or 4 supplements -- to improve their overall general nutrition," said Dr. Emdur.
That's not to say there's a silver bullet. Dr. Emdur stands by the age old benefits of healthy eating. His top menu: the Mediterranean Diet, high in vegetables, leafy greens, mono-unsaturated fats and fiber.
Combined with exercise, it's a recipe for a long and active life.
