SAN DIEGO - Military officials released the name Tuesday of a 23-year-old active-duty Marine who was killed in a motorcycle crash just outside Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where he was stationed.

Sgt. Michael Martins of Cape Coral, Fla., was fatally injured Friday morning when the driver of an eastbound Lexus sedan made a left turn directly in the path of his oncoming Yamaha motorcycle on Miramar Road, near Camino Ruiz, according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Witnesses performed CPR on the serviceman -- who was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred -- until paramedics arrived and took over for them.

Despite the prompt lifesaving attempts, he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Martins was an intelligence specialist assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, according MCAS Miramar's public affairs office.

He had been a Marine for five years and did two tours of duty in Iraq.

His military commendations included an Iraq Campaign Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

“He was a really good Marine. He inspired everyone around him,” said his wife Allison Martins in an interview with the Fort Myers News-Press.

“He’s the love of my life. He’s my soul mate. It doesn’t seem real,” she said.

A memorial service for Michael Martins is scheduled for Wednesday at the Marine Air Corps Station Miramar.
