SAN DIEGO - A memorial service is pending for Nobel Prize-winning UC San Diego economist Clive W.J. Granger.

Granger died Wednesday in San Diego, UCSD announced Friday. He was 74.

The cause of his dead was not immediately disclosed.

Granger was born in Wales, United Kingdom, in 1934. He earned his doctorate at the University of Nottingham in England before coming to UCSD in 1974, where he remained with the Department of Economics until his death.

UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox called Granger a "much beloved professor of economics."

"I join with the campus community in expressing sadness at the loss of one of the globe's leading economists, widely known for his brilliance, collegiality and close working relationships with students," she said.

Granger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2003 for his work in the analysis of time series data, which are collections of data over time such as stock prices or national income.

According to UCSD, his work revolutionized the way economists analyze financial and macroeconomic data.

At UCSD, Granger built up the econometrics group, which is ranked among the top in the nation, university officials said.

In addition to winning the Nobel Prize, Granger was inducted into the Order of Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, son, Mark and daughter, Claire.
