VISTA - An Oceanside High School basketball coach and physical education teacher who allegedly had a sexual relationship with a student pleaded not guilty Monday to five felony and misdemeanor charges.
Cory Hogue, a 37-year-old married father of two, allegedly began having sex with the girl when she was 15, according to Oceanside police. They allegedly had sex at the defendant's home on two occasions, in October 2007 and September of this year.
He faces felony charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and committing a lewd act on a child and two misdemeanor counts of annoying or molesting a child. He faces a maximum of four years in prison if convicted.
Judge Marshall Hockett reduced Hogue's bail from $250,000 to $100,000 during the defendant's arraignment Monday at the Vista Courthouse.
A readiness conference was set for Dec. 14 and a preliminary hearing for Jan. 4.
Hogue, the boys varsity basketball coach at Oceanside High School, has been employed by the Oceanside School District since August 2006. Previously, he was a teacher at Orange Glen High School in Escondido, police said.
Gabriela Hernandez is a student at Oceanside High School. She can't believe Hogue would do this. "If he was ever involved with a student, I never thought it would be like that."
Amanda Orozco agrees. She's a senior at Oceanside High. "You see it on TV and the news all the time but to happen here at Oceanside is pretty crazy."
Hogue's twitter feed concentrates on his coaching but has some more personal reflections as well, such as:
"Love and live life. Make it great and remember how important you are to your kids. Also, dont take life so seriously. Laugh sometimes!,"
"what is your motivation? Mine, has to be family, being a great dad and creating good future fathers. We have such a responsibility" and
"How fast it goes, and what kinds of role models we are to children."
Hogue's students say the allegations are especially shocking because they viewed their teacher as a family man.
"He would take care of his kids during school when he had to watch them," said Hernandez. "So you'd see him with his kids during class, running around."
He has been placed on leave from his job pending the outcome of the criminal case against him.
