SAN DIEGO - Authorities issued an expanded ocean-pollution alert for areas near the U.S.-Mexico border Monday due to continuing influxes of sewage-fouled water out of Baja California.

The area covered by the warning now includes the entirety of Imperial Beach as well as Border Field State Park and Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, the county Department of Environmental Health advised.

Rain-driven contamination has been entering the surf from the Tijuana River since Sunday, the agency reported.

Signs warning of health hazards will stand along the stretch of coastline until follow-up testing deems the areas safe again for recreational uses.
