SAN DIEGO - The sexual assault of a female student by a group of men on the San Diego State University campus is being investigated by campus police.
The attack happened this past Sunday morning in the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, behind the Aztec Corner Apartments.
A dusty vacant lot became the backdrop to the horrifying assault. The victim told police that six black men attacked her. They held her down, poured liquid into her mouth, and sexually assaulted her.
Breanna Piper knows the pain this latest victim is going through. She just started up a campus organization at SDSU for sexual assault victims called Sorority Outreach and Support.
"We have a society that likes to victimize the victim, and kind of blame the victim," Piper said. "Our organization wants to change that culture."
Piper says her boyfriend of a year raped her at an on-campus fraternity. She sees the problem growing on the SDSU campus.
"I think there is a growing problem with sexual assault," Piper told San Diego 6. "More now than ever, girls are feeling that they can come out about it."
Campus police have put out fliers and an e-mail alert about the attack. They say the victim encountered the suspects before the attack, as she walked to a party.
Lt. Lamine Seca with SDSU police said, "We encourage -- if they are going to be out late at night -- go in groups. Stay with friends. Be aware of your surroundings."
Anyone with information in the case was urged to call SDSU police at (619) 594-1991 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers.
