Supporters of an amendment to ban gay marriage gathered in El Cajon Monday night for a town hall meeting.
Local Republicans at the rally are in favor of Proposition 8. They say San Diego County is leading the way in raising donations and mobilizing volunteers to pass the controversial ballot initiative.
"I think we're going to win," enthuses Mary Kuper. "This is the largest grass roots movement ever in the history of California. Over 60,000 volunteers have been out walking neighborhoods, getting people registered to vote."
Gay marriage supporters are also optimistic. The No on 8 campaign is also getting some big donations including a $1.2 million check from the ACLU.
"Gay people are just as normal as heterosexuals, said Sean Morton. "We all have our rights."
Recent polls indicate proposition eight is failing but only by a slight margin. Both sides believe the initiative is too close to call.
