SAN DIEGO - A popular San Diego summer event may be no more. Street Scene is in financial trouble. The company that runs it is close to $3-million in the hole.
Street Scene is a wild two-day event featuring some of the best bands in the nation. This August, Street Scene celebrated 25 years. Thousands packed the East Village downtown to enjoy the festive ambiance, great food and the music of nationally recognized bands.
Beau Randall knows all about the big party. He's had his share of Street Scene experiences. He said, "I enjoy the fact that there are big talents that can come together and everyone from San Diego comes together for a great concert festival."
The event could all come to an end. The company that manages Street Scene is in the red. The owner calls it insolvent. Rob Hagey Productions is in control of the festival. His production company is selling off all its assets to pay $2.8-million to creditors.
Hagey has contacted creditors telling them his company is insolvent with assets worth far less than its debts.
In an e-mail to San Diego City Beat, Rob Hagey said, "As you know, we had a very tough year. The attendance dropped below 50-percent of what we had anticipated for Street Scene...so the loss was substantial for the company."
Rachel Thomas, a fan of the music festival, can't believe the last note may have played at Street Scene. "I am outraged. I think that it's a fun thing for people to do. I am really sad to see it go away."
