SANTEE - "Dog Eats Beehive!" Out of 80,000 pet insurance claims for the month of April, this story topped them all. The largest pet insurance company selected this as their most unusual claim.

Sandra Coe owns the one-year-old Labrador, Ellie, who created all the buzz.  She tells San Diego 6 that the dog has always had quite an appetite. "She ate the letter 'W' off our laptop. She's eaten a couple pairs of shoes. She's eaten several wooden Thomas the Train toys."

None of these "meals" prepared Sandra for the shock when the family discovered what Ellie had just devoured.

"I was stunned. I couldn't believe our dog had eaten thousands of bees," Coe told San Diego 6. "I heard her vomiting and I went to see what was wrong, and I noticed a large clump."

Straight to the vet Ellie went.

"They really must have tasted good, because she ate the whole thing," Coe said.

The vet checked Ellie out and figured the bees were dead before they were eaten so she wasn't stung.

Coe said, "The vet just said she wasn't allergic to bees, but if she would've been, she would die."

10-year old Tanner Coe was the one who bought Ellie about a year ago, and she wasn't cheap -- a whopping 400 bucks.

"I felt kind of scared, because I saved a lot of money to buy her -- and I like her," said Tanner.

Tanner will never forget how Ellie looked after she ate the bees. "She looked like she did something wrong. Like she was in trouble."

After a dose of medicine, Ellie went back home.

“She acted just fine that week, really, but every time she went to the bathroom, she pooped bees. Thousands of bees," said Robert Coe. "I don’t know where they all came from – the hive wasn’t that large.”

From now on, the Coe's are going to try to keep bees off of Ellie's menu.
