CHULA VISTA - A possibly gang-related fight between two groups of youths on a South Bay roadside escalated Wednesday into a stabbing that left one of the brawlers hospitalized with life-threatening wounds, police said.
The fracas in the 200 block G Street in Chula Vista was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m., police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.
After being stabbed, the victim flagged down a passing motorist, who took him to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Gonzales said. Due to the severity of the youth's wounds, physicians had him transferred to UCSD Medical Center, which has a full trauma center.
The patient, who appeared to be a teenager, refused to cooperate with police in any way, including providing his name or age, according to Gonzales.
Exactly what sparked the fight was unknown, though officers suspected that street-gang affiliations may have played a role, the spokesman said.
