An Imperial Beach optometrist is fighting for her life after being brutally beaten in front of her home by her won daughter.
18-year-old Jillian Alisha Stokes is at the Las Colinas Detention Center in Santee, jailed on a $500,000 bond.
A prosecutor told a judge on Wednesday that the teenager beat up her mother, Bonnie Spector, after Specter refused to take the girl surfing.
Jillian stood emotionless before the judge. Standing at only 5'1", Stokes is accused of beating her mother to the point of near death.
"The victim was being kicked in the head numerous times by the defendant," claimed Deputy District Attorney Rick Clabby. "Her shoes were found to be blood stained."
Detectives say Stokes pummeled her 60-year old mother in front of their Tierrasanta home Monday afternoon. The teen knocked her mother to the ground, kicked her furiously and left her lying unconscious in the sun for so long before calling 911 that the mother's stomach became sunburned.
David Pena lives right across the street from the family. He knows the victim and daughter. He tells us the victim works as an eye doctor at this Imperial Beach optometrist shop.
Pena said of the victim, "She is a nice lady."
Pena remembers Stokes playing with his daughter and coming over to use his backyard pool. He never thought she could do this.
"She's just a neat kid," said Pena. "I hadn't seen her in two years, and recently I saw her and I didn't recognize her. She had changed a lot."
Stokes pleaded not guilty. If convicted, she could spend the next 16 years to life in prison.
