SAN DIEGO - A 21-year-old man speeding in a Toyota Camry crashed into a telephone pole in San Diego's Clairemont neighborhood Saturday, killing himself and a passenger, police said.

The Medical Examiner's Office has identified the driver as Mario De La Rosa of Serra Messa.  His passenger is 19-year-old Paul Albert Alferos, Jr of San Diego.

The wreck was at 2929 Clairemont Drive at roughly 2:30 a.m., and broke the pole in two, San Diego police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.

The Toyota was headed south when De La Rosa lost control of the car, he said.

Arriving officers found the unrestrained passenger in the backseat and declared him dead on the spot, Hayward said. De La Rosa died later at a hospital, he said.
