SAN DIEGO - UC San Diego received an $8.9 million federal economic stimulus grant to fund a study of the brains of young people, it was announced Thursday.
The "PING" study, short for pediatric imaging, neurocognition and genetics, will be conducted at 10 sites around the country. Researchers will study brain development in children by using gene-mapping tools and imaging technology, with the goal of determining why people have different personalities and mental qualities, according to UCSD.
The grant, awarded through the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is one of the largest UCSD has received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
