SAN DIEGO - Running back LaDainian Tomlinson will resign from the San Diego Chargers and retire from the National Football League at a news conference set for Monday, team officials announced today.

Tomlinson, the Chargers first-round draft pick in 2001, will speak at the event along with Chargers President Dean Spanos. Current and former team members will also be in attendance, officials said.

San Diego 6 News in the Morning spoke with ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen who said, "I know this much, we enjoyed one of the best running backs ever in LaDainian Tomlinson".

Tomlinson, the NFL's fifth all-time leading rusher, played for the Chargers from 2001-2009 then spent two seasons with the New York Jets.

More reaction on L.T.'s retirement announcement coming up tonight on San Diego 6 News at 10 p.m.
