COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — A former Compton high school basketball coach has been convicted of misdemeanor child molestation, but acquitted of felony theft and forgery.

The jury's verdict against Russell Otis on Tuesday will bar him from coaching or teaching minors. Otis was fired in May after being charged with offering to pay one of his players for sex.

The former Dominguez High School coach was acquitted of charges of forgery and theft for depositing a $15,000 check from Nike written to the Compton Unified School District into his personal bank account.

His defense attorney, Leonard Levine, says he will appeal the misdemeanor conviction.
