TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona State University student who was teaching math at Tempe High School is now facing sexual misconduct charges.
Tempe police say they arrested 26-year-old Joel Calderon last week after learning about a possible relationship between him and a female student at Tempe High. Police were initially contacted by school administrators.
Sgt. Michael Pooley says Calderon admitted to the inappropriate relationship with the 16-year-old student during an interview.
Court documents say the alleged instances of sexual contact happened in early November and that Calderon was fired from his position.
Calderon is facing six counts of sexual conduct with a minor. It's not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
Pooley says the investigation is ongoing, and there's a possibility of additional charges.
